EvIDENz Workshop in Ukraine 2018

Between May 14th and 16th 2018 a workshop and a training session about the methodologies and application of satellite datasets on the characterization of droughts and their impacts on the agricultural sector was conducted in Kiev. The event was organised by the Space Research Institute of Ukraine (NASU-SSAU) and UN-SPIDER in collaboration with ZFL and UNU-EHS. In this event, ZFL presented the workflows and products related to the exploitation of MODIS and medium-to-high resolution satellites such as Landsat-8 and Sentinel 1/2 to evaluate the hazard component associated with droughts within the SFDRR framework (Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030) for the oblast of Kiev. Hazard and drought classification maps for some sample areas (districts) were introduced to the stakeholders. Proposed methods were explained during a training session.  Additionally, a web application based on the Google Earth Engine cloud computing platform for obtaining diverse products related to vegetation condition was presented. Participants in the workshop included the Institute of Water Problems and Land reclamation of NAAS; the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center (UHMC); the Institute of Agroecology and Environmental Management; the State Service of Ukraine for Geodesy, Cartography and Cadastre; the NCSFCT National Center Of Space Facilities Control And Test, the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine, the National Institute for Soil Science and Agro-Chemistry Research, the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine, among others, who contributed with their valuable knowledge and experience to the improvement of the proposed methods.  If you want to learn more about the event visit the website http://www.un-spider.org/news-and-events/events/stakeholder-workshop-earth-observation-based-information-products-drought-0.
