Background: The PhD research seeks to approach the global environmental footprint of the large-scale mining sector by calculating the land surface areas transformed during the life cycle of standard metal mines. The hypothesis states that the larger the amount of ore processed, the higher the land required by a mine. The research seeks to establish correlation curves which describe the land use metrics of mines plotted against total extraction (ore + waste) based on the existing mines inventory provided by the Raw Materials Group. Land requirement calculations will be done using Landsat images by means of an automatic work flow which is currently under development at ZFL.
